BR 57: The Knack by Norm Brodsky

Category: 3 – SHELF it (All Categories are 1 – Read ASAP!, 2 – BUY it!, 3 – SHELF it, 4 – SOMEDAY it)

Comments: Norm Brodsky shares some very profound insights of his thinking as a serial entrepreneur that (in my opinion) is a realistic approach to looking at things. This isn’t one for tech entrepreneurs who want to change the world – more for someone who wants to start a small business. Norm has a few simple ideas – go for a business idea that’s atleast a 100 years old. Don’t bother trying to create anything novel as it’ll cost too much to educate the market. Essentially, go into a business with tons of competitors who have lost the connection with the market in one way or the other, ensure high profit margins and go for success.

It’s not necessarily the ‘right’ way as there is no real ‘right’ way.. it’s honest, straightforward and from my limited experience, he’s definitely got a point.

BR 36: E-Myth by Michael Gerber

Category: 2 – BUY it! (All Categories are 1 – Read ASAP!, 2 – BUY it!, 3 – SHELF it, 4 – SOMEDAY it)

Comments: Fantastic book for those planning to make a foray into entrepreneurship someday. So, if you ever aspire to be an entrepreneur, I think this is a MUST READ as it makes you see entrepreneurship in very different light.

What to expect: The story of a woman who has reached out to an expert for help to fix her once successful, now problematic venture. The whole book details out the ‘E-Myth’ way of thinking about running your own small business.

BR 31: 100 Great Businesses and the Minds behind them by Emily Ross & Angus Holland

Category: 3 – SHELF it (All Categories are 1 – Read ASAP!, 2 – BUY it!, 3 – SHELF it, 4 – SOMEDAY it)

Comments: A great read. Not a business book , just a book that will take you through the lives of 100 incredible businesses and the people who made them tick. These are short bites about 100 businesses and their founders and goes a LONG way in just increasing basic awareness of the world around us. Someone once described this as a – “If they could do it, why not you?” sort of book. I think that’s accurate. I really enjoyed it.

BR 25: The Art of Profitability by Adrian J Slywotzky

Category: 3 – SHELF it (All Categories are 1 – Read ASAP!, 2 – BUY it!, 3 – SHELF it, 4 – SOMEDAY it)

Comments: More like an academic look into businesses and profitability. Good in terms of the various profitability models discussed, decent in terms of linking it up into a story but I wouldn’t rate it very high on impact. The paperback could offer a better experience though as it was difficult to follow a few of the numbers and calculations on audio.

What to expect: A detailed look at about 20 (if I remember right) profit models weaved into a moderately engaging story. If you are looking to start your own business, this could be a good book to read to get you thinking about profitability.

BR 21: How to make big money in your small business – Jeffrey J Fox

Category: 4 – SOMEDAY it (All Categories are 1 – Read ASAP!, 2 – BUY it!, 3 – SHELF it, 4 – SOMEDAY it)

Comments: This was my final Jeffrey J Fox book. The issue I have with it is that it makes it look too easy, when it is not in reality..

What to expect:
Many good bite sized learnings and short stories. Not short on learnings, but a tad short on the real difficulty level..

BR 7: You Need To Be a Little Crazy by Barry J Moltz

Category: 3 – SHELF it (All Categories are 1 – Read ASAP!, 2 – BUY it!, 3 – SHELF it, 4 – SOMEDAY it)

Comments: This book is a fund read for to be entrepreneurs. For others, a good read as it does tend to broaden understanding about going into business alone, the pros and cons. (Add on Mar 16, 2016 – However, I think there have been better entrepreneurship books written since)

What to expect: An entrepreneur’s life story… I found the book to be more focussed on all the cons and struggles of being an entrepreneur but Barry J Moltz insists that it is the point – if, after hearing all his struggles and concerns, you still believe in your idea and believe entrepreneurship is your thing, then that’s great! An interesting approach at any rate. If you are going to invest in the audio book, you will feel the sincerity in the author’s voice when he talks about his work, and life..
